Experience is a hard teacher

Tell me about it!

You have a startup, or children, or buy a house, or a marriage, or get fired, or have to fire someone: we all have to act all the time in the absence of the the information we’d need to understand whether we’re making the right decision or not.

Sometimes ya just gotta take the risk.

And sometimes ya gotta take the hit.

That’s startups for ya.

Saw this sign in Jonathan’s Fish & Chips, a Palo Alto hole-in-the-wall where you can score hush puppies and fried fish coated in crispy cornmeal batter, as well as other traditional soul food fare. There’s a lot of wisdom in this food. Got a hard decision to make? Eat a good, unfussy meal and read The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, the original cool customer. Try out the Eightfold Path, too — you don’t have to be a believer to get the benefit of the wisdom here. Keeps you from getting too hard when you’re trying to hang tough.

You mean besides my agent? :-)

Nah — it’s just a startup thing that you have to make decisions big and small without a lot of information. Reminds me of previous tough decisions. I’ve certainly had to fire people in my career, though — not fun!
